The Nobel Prizes are five separate prizes awarded to those who, during the preceding year, have conferred the greatest benefit to humankind, as established by the 1895 will of Swedish chemist, engineer, and industrialist Alfred Nobel, in the year before he died.

The 2024 Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel—commonly referred to as the Nobel Prize in Economics—was awarded to three distinguished economists: Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James Robinson.

Valued at 11 million Swedish crowns (approximately $1 million or €950,000), the prize was conferred by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences in recognition of their research on how institutions are created and how they influence economic prosperity (Ricciuti).

Their groundbreaking work sheds light on why some nations achieve higher per capita incomes while others face persistent economic difficulties, highlighting the crucial role of strong institutions in fostering sustainable growth and social stability.
